Skincare Tips – Photoshoot Day Preparation

Doing family photography in Portland OR is so much fun. So many beautiful locations and amazing families to work with. I wanted to create a few blog posts to help the mamas I work with prepare for their session. We tend to worry about a lot of things. From what to wear, how will the kids behave, how to look our best, hope they won’t skip their nap, can they survive for one hour without snacks, will my partner smile??? ( no? just me then).

Why skincare matters? Because I want you to feel your best on your photoshoot day. The more confident you feel, the more relaxed and happy you will feel, and that is great news for your family pictures!

To make things a little easier I invited Portland, OR make up artist and beauty extraordinaire, Annah Yevelenko, of Belle Face to tells us all the inside secrets to having amazing skin on your maternity and family portraits. Annah has a wealth of knowledge and, as you can see on her website, she can make a face look like a real work of art. So here are a few quick tips from her to make your session day prep a breeze.

ONE MONTH before…

Should be spent figuring out what you want your hair and makeup to look like for the shoot – collect images for your makeup artist, or practice on yourself to make sure you know what you’re doing the day of.

You can plan on any special things you might be wanting to try, liken lash extensions, you can always do touch ups a few days prior.

ONE WEEK before

Haircut, facial, or lash extensions/touch ups. Give yourself ample time to be able to fix anything, should an oopsie happen. This is not the time to try new products, services, or beauty providers.

ONE DAY before

Finalize your makeup and hair looks. If your hair usually looks better the day after setting it – now is the time to do that. Do you have all your makeup ready to go for tomorrow? Any zits that need zapping? (White toothpaste overnight always does the trick for me.) A facial massage won’t hurt, and you can do it all yourself in under 10 minutes. Go on, you deserve it. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and getting an appropriate amount of sleep.

THE DAY OF your shoot

Should be a breeze (children depending) if you’ve spent a little time prepping. Otherwise, make sure your lip color/balm is on hand – all that smiling (and sometimes nerves) can make your lips disappear, and nobody needs that panic.

A little hairspray goes a long way, I rely on travel sizes for easy transport and less weight.

A setting spray for your face can be a godsend, especially if the elements are in your way, this travel cutie should also join your purse family.

A few q-tips on hand will be perfect saviors if your left eye starts leaking for no reason, or if your hair whipped the lipstick onto your forehead.

Blotting paper is another good one for when you need a little pick me up around the t-zone. I prefer this to powder, because I always want to see skin instead of makeup. (A light tissue dab works just at well.)

Please always bring water and a light snack, we all forget to eat sometimes, and becoming tired during a shoot might not make for the perfect you in each shot.
